In February 2018, Ira Levin took over the musical direction of Schumann’s “Scenes from Faust” on twelve hour’s notice with the Suisse Romande Orchestra in Geneva. His US operatic debut, likewise on short notice, took place in April 2017 at Lincoln Center, conducting Respighi’s rarely heard “La campana sommersa” in the first season of the newly re-organized New York City Opera. He received unanimously positive reviews from all of the leading papers and musical journals. His debut at the Théâtre de Geneve was in November 2016 with Marschner’s “Der Vampyr” and several performances of Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella”.
His orchestration of Respighi’s violin and piano sonata in b-minor appeared in February 2017 as “Concerto in b-minor” and his latest orchestration, of Brahms’s monumental Piano Sonata # 3 opus 5, appeared in January 2018. The full scores and performance materials of his 7 orchestrations have been published by “Edition Tilli” of Finland. They are also being published in study score format by the Munich-based Musikproduktion Hoeflich, in their “Repertoire Explorer” series.
His recordings of many his piano works can be heard on You Tube, along with the scores. Click here to see them.
